Writing with Confidence

Has your child ever struggled with writing? Whose hasn’t! Our Writing Team and tutors have found that one of the biggest struggles for kids is how to brainstorm ideas and how to get those great ideas onto paper. We’ve redone our Writing Program for 2010 to help kids develop ideas for great writing at school, at home and on tests.

Our new Writing Program focuses on:

Developing Ideas
As we all know, translating unique thoughts and opinions into a shining, shimmering piece of writing can be tricky. (Imagine how much easier blogging would be if we had organized ideas when we sat in front of the computer!) The biggest questions are why, who, what and how: Why am I writing? Who am I writing for? What do I want to say? How do I organize my thoughts?

In our new Writing Program, tutors start by helping students develop their brainstorming skills to think up, recognize and articulate their ideas. Starting with developed ideas also helps prevent the common challenge of getting stuck on rules (grammar and structure) and losing the ideas and opinions that make writing fun.

Grammar and Structure
Our tutors teach grammar and structure in context, rather than through isolated exercises. This helps students recognize and use grammar and structure as a tool to express their ideas, rather than a matrix of tricky and sometimes confusing rules to follow.

Writing Portfolio
Through it all, students develop skills to write in all genres – persuasive, descriptive, expository and narrative. They develop a portfolio of ideas, outlines, drafts and final pieces that develop their essay-writing and timed-writing skills.
