Motivation in the First Weeks of School

The beginning of a new school year is the perfect time to help your child develop a can-do attitude. Here’s how:

•    Talk to your child regularly about schoolwork and projects. If a big project is coming up, help your student set smaller goals to complete the project.

•    Help set up a quiet homework space and be available at homework time. Carve out a space that is just for your student and let your child have fun personalizing the space to be uniquely his or her own. This makes the space for schoolwork comfortable and fun, which your child will love and will make all the difference when it’s homework time.

•    Make sure your child knows that you’re interested in what goes on at school. That doesn’t mean just homework and grades! Ask about teachers and friends. Listen to his or her stories about the school day.

•    Get to know your child’s teacher and other school staff. Spend time in the building if you can, and contact them whenever you have any questions or concerns about your child’s academic or social development.

•    Encourage your child to get involved in extra-curricular clubs and activities. Attend activities that your child is participating in whenever you can.

Getting involved will not only help your student acclimate to new school routines, but also build your child’s motivation and self-confidence.
